Fighting obesity: a call to arms.

چکیده
Obesity is a public health, medical, legislative, environmental, and societal concern. Total direct cost of obesity in Canada is estimated to be over 1.8 billion dollars per year, representing approximately 2.4% of total health expenditures. According to the Canadian Community Health Survey, obesity rates have almost tripled in the past few decades, increasing to 15% in 2000-2001. Another 33% of Canadians are overweight (BMI= 25-29 kg/m). The problem of obesity among children has dramatically increased and if the situation persists, obesity in adults will continue to rise. A paradigm shift on how we view food, activity, and health is needed if we wish to combat the global epidemic of obesity. The amount of food consumed has not received the attention it deserves. Marketplace food portions have increased dramatically over the past 30 years and are reported to contribute to the obesity epidemic. Young and Nestle compared marketplace food portions with standardized food portion sizes and found that portions are consistently larger (standard portion for a bagel is 58 g whereas a marketplace bagel can weigh as much as 170 g). Fast-food portion sizes have also increased. In 1955, a single order of fries weighed 68 g and today it can be as high as 200 g. Rolls et al. reported that individuals who were served larger portions consumed 30% more calories on the day of testing. Furthermore, 30% of individuals base the amount of food they eat on the amount they are served.

Our experimental analysis of alliances in conflicts leads to three main findings. First, even in the absence of repeated interaction, direct contact or communication, free-riding among alliance members is far less pronounced than what would be expected from non-cooperative theory. Second, this possible solidarity among ‘brothers in arms’ when fighting against an outside enemy may rapidly deteri...
متن کاملChildhood obesity: a societal problem to solve.
In contrast to other threats to American children's health, the treatment and prevention of childhood obesity are considered the responsibility of individual children and their parents.
